What are SEO keywords and phrases?

SEO Keywords or Phrases are what help your website to rank in the search engine result pages (SERPs). They are also phrases that potential customers are searching for. Many factors affect your site’s ranking, but keywords help the search engines to know what your site is about. It helps them to display pages that relate to searches and ensure that they are offering users the information that they are searching for.

One of the main goals of SEO is to identify the right keywords that your target audience will use when they are searching for the services or products that you offer. These words or phrases are used in your content and help people to locate your website via the search engines.

There are two main types of SEO keywords (phrases):

Short Tail Phrases

These are phrases that are only made up of one or two keywords. These keywords have a high search volume where lots of people are searching for them each month. When you are searching for keywords for your site you may think that these are a good choice because of their search volume, but they usually have very high competition which means that you will have a hard time ranking well using those keywords. You will also be competing against companies that are established and have used those keywords for years.

Long Tail Phrases

These keywords can be three words or ten words long and may be even longer. These keyword phrases have a lower search volume, but they also have less competition. This means that you have a better chance of reaching the few people who search for these phrases every month. The intent of long tail keywords is much clearer than short tail keywords.

Keyword research can help you to identify the right keywords for your website. There are many tools that you can use to find the right keywords and plenty of trusted approaches to SEO. The starting point is to choose a good base of targeted keywords for your site.
