Definition: 301 Redirect

« Back to Glossary Index

A “301 redirect” is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. When a web page is permanently redirected, it sends a HTTP response status code of 301 to the browser, indicating that the page has been moved to a new location permanently. This type of redirect is commonly used to redirect traffic from an old page to a new page, to preserve the search engine ranking of the old page, or to redirect users to the correct version of a page (e.g. with or without “www”).
