Definition: 404 Response Code

« Back to Glossary Index

A “404 Response Code” is an HTTP response status code indicating that the requested resource could not be found on the server. When a client, such as a web browser, requests a resource that does not exist, the server returns a 404 status code to indicate that the requested page or file could not be found. This code is commonly displayed as a “404 Error” page, which informs the user that the requested resource could not be found and provides options for navigating to a different page or searching the website. The 404 response code is often used as a way to handle broken links or missing pages on a website.
