Definition: Meta Description

« Back to Glossary Index

The meta description is a brief HTML attribute that provides a summary of a web page’s content. It is typically displayed in the search engine results page (SERP) below the page title and URL and is intended to give the user an idea of what the page is about. The meta description can affect the visibility and click-through rate (CTR) of a page, as it can influence a user’s decision to click on the result. However, search engines may sometimes use alternative content instead of the meta description, such as page content snippets or other text they deem relevant to the query.
