Definition: Meta Keywords

« Back to Glossary Index

The meta keywords tag is an HTML attribute that was used in the past to provide a list of keywords relevant to the content of a web page. The idea was that search engines would use this information to better understand the page’s content and improve its ranking in search results.

However, over time, search engines became better at understanding the content of a page without the use of meta keywords and many webmasters began to abuse the tag by including irrelevant or spammy keywords in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings. As a result, most major search engines no longer use the meta keywords tag as a ranking factor and it is generally considered to be irrelevant for modern search engine optimization (SEO) practices.
