Definition: Meta Tags

« Back to Glossary Index

Meta tags are HTML attributes that provide metadata about a web page. They are placed in the head section of a web page’s HTML code and are not visible to users but are used by search engines and other web technologies to better understand the content of the page.

There are several types of meta tags, including the “meta description” tag, which provides a brief summary of the page’s content; the “meta keywords” tag, which lists keywords relevant to the page’s content; the “meta robots” tag, which provides instructions to search engine bots about how to crawl and index the page; and the “meta refresh” tag, which can be used to refresh or redirect the page after a specified amount of time.

Meta tags can affect the visibility and ranking of a web page in search results, as well as its appearance and behavior on other platforms and technologies. By using appropriate and relevant meta tags, webmasters can help improve the accessibility and discoverability of their pages, and can also provide additional information and context that can be used by search engines and other technologies to better understand and interact with the content of the page.
