Definition: TrustRank

« Back to Glossary Index

TrustRank is a method used by search engines to determine the trustworthiness and authority of a website. It is based on the idea that not all websites are equally trustworthy, and that some websites are more authoritative and reliable than others.

TrustRank is used by search engines to help determine the relevance and ranking of a website in search results. The basic idea behind TrustRank is that search engines can use links from trustworthy and authoritative websites to assess the trustworthiness of other websites.

For example, if a trustworthy and authoritative website links to another website, the search engine might assume that the linked-to website is also trustworthy and authoritative. On the other hand, if a website is linked to by many low-quality or spammy websites, the search engine might assume that the website is not trustworthy and may lower its ranking in search results.

The goal of TrustRank is to help search engines identify and penalize websites that engage in spammy or manipulative practices, such as link buying or cloaking, and to reward websites that provide high-quality and relevant content. By doing so, TrustRank helps search engines to provide more accurate and relevant search results to users
