Definition: Paid link

« Back to Glossary Index

A paid link is a type of link that is purchased or exchanged for compensation. In the context of search engine optimization (SEO), paid links are links that are bought or traded with the goal of improving a website’s ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Paid links can come in different forms, such as sponsored posts, directory submissions, or contextual links. In some cases, these links can be easily recognizable, while in other cases they may be disguised as normal editorial links.

Purchasing or exchanging links for the purpose of improving search engine rankings is generally considered to be a violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and can result in penalties, including lower search engine rankings or even removal from the search engine index.

For this reason, many SEO experts advise against using paid links and instead recommend focusing on building a strong, natural link profile through high-quality content and outreach. A strong, natural link profile is less likely to result in penalties and can provide more sustainable long-term benefits for a website’s search engine visibility.
